Women, Performance Art, and Cultural Expression in Africa: Past, Present and Future Panel Session

Lagos Studies Association (LSA) hosted a noteworthy panel session on "Women, Performance Art, and Cultural Expression in Africa: Past, Present and Future" in June 2025, co-organized by Ruth Epochi-Oliseh, Mary Nkemdilim Okocha-Ajila, and Dr."Bunmi Adedina. Scholars, artists, and activists engaged in rich discussions exploring how African women harness performance to resist gendered oppression, preserve cultural heritage, and drive social change. Presentations ranged from historical analyses to contemporary digital practices and future-oriented strategies.

Dr. Bunmi Adedina (Lagos State University of Education) played a central role, offering expert insight drawn from her leadership of Boab Purple Arts a platform focused on children's development, drama education, mentorship, and research. As panel organizer, she helped guide conversations on reclaiming female narratives in performance, highlighting both scholarly and practical dimensions of cultural expression. Her engagement underscored the session's commitment to nurturing future generations through performance-led empowerment.
